As secretary of State for the Home Office, Lord Sydney was the minister responsible for the planned settlement of Australia. It was his decision to appoint Captain Arthur Phillip as Governor, who was responsible for the survival of the fledgling colony. Sydney Cove was named by Phillip in honour of Townshend & the City which has grown up around it, now bears his name. It appears that these officer’s pistols were made for John Thomas Townshend, 2nd Viscount Sydney (1764-1831). The maker of the pistols, W Mills, operated from 120 High Holborn, London (1810-1860) & their style & design suggest they were made between 1810-1815. #646 N/L Catalogue A50 Item 298 $18000 – 20000
