HIGHLAND OFFICER’S 1828 PATTERN BASKETHILT SWORD: vg straight 32½” blade by P.G.DODD & SON 146 LEADENHALL, LONDON, etched with ROYAL CYPHER, VR, & acanthus leaf decoration, obverse side ROYAL CYPHER & inscription DUKE OF EDINBURGS. HIGHLANDERS SYDNEY N.S.W., acanthus leaves & thistles; boar’s head to ricasso; hall marked, silver basket with red fabric buff leather liner; vg. fish skin grip bound with woven copper wire, complete exc cond hallmarked for London 1869 silver scabbard, inscribed Captn J. Campbell to the throat; o/a exc cond. Captain John A. Campbell of the Duke of Edinburgh Highland Rifle, a Sydney volunteer corps was appointed Lieutenant in No.1 Company of the unit on 15.12.1868. He resigned his appointment on 24.01.1878. He was a prominent magistrate who resided at Randwick (Little Coogee Bay) & was one of a group of citizens who raised the unit in 1868 & provided funds for the purchase of the pipes & drums for the Corps. 528 MAGNIFICENT BRESCIAN WHEEL LOCK IVORY STOCKED CARBINE WITH 15 CARATE GOLD FITTINGS: C.1645; 25 smooth bore, 24″ two stage faceted barrel with silver grey finish & rear & front iron sights; ornate, relief engraved wheel lock mechanism has forest dryads surrounding the centre wheel; pierced & relief engraved dryad on the cock arm at the bend; chisel engraving to tail of lock plate with raised head; en-suite frizzen spring; caste 15 carat gold trigger is a swans body with a human face, the balance of gold work has foliate panels, faces & sprites to decorative forend cap, fore grip, ram rod pipe, trigger guard, butt plate & comb; bone ram rod with gold screw tip of a naked woman; iron domed side nails with a crossed pattern; iron protective butt rest in the form of a head; beautiful aged patina to ivory full stock, ornate carving to underbody at the lock surround, several fine aged cracks & one inlet to obverse side, chipped edges to ivory at under side lock surround. This is an exceptional piece, the artwork, engravings, castes & ivory, etc are astounding. All designs have Renaissance Era presentation. This is truly a magnificent piece to own for any collector. The CITES “permit to export” this Wheel lock from New Zealand into Australia in 2009 by Ian Cummins is to hand.  This should aid in an export CITES, should it be required. N/L
